In December 2024, the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency released a draft Permit Modification and Notice of Construction Permit for the Ash Grove Cement Company (3801 E Marginal Way S), which would remove an existing 30% limit on the burning of tires as a fuel source and negatively impact air quality in Georgetown. Burning tires can emit particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, and other toxic chemicals into the air.
The Duwamish River Community Coalition (DRCC) is forming a coalition of community members and organizations that oppose the Ash Grove permit modification to prevent increasing toxic air pollution in the Duwamish Valley.
