RSP survey: Reroute 99

Group says survey respondents want road rerouted and land redeveloped

When it comes to State Route 99, a majority of survey respondents support an option called “Reroute + Reclaim,” according to a Reconnect South Park Coalition press release.

The highway diagonally divides the South Park neighborhood (just south of Georgetown) and the coalition has been looking at ways to alter the road.

One of four options, “Reroute + Reclaim” calls for SR 99’s removal and for parks, green spaces and housing to be built on 100 reclaimed acres. Regional traffic would be shifted to Interstate 5 and SR 509.

The survey will remain open through the end of the year and Georgetown residents can participate.

A June “Potential Futures Analysis Report” developed by the City of Seattle and RSP also pointed to the “Reroute + Reclaim” option to address priorities such as reducing local traffic impacts, creating more housing and restoring land, according to the press release.

In 2027, the Reconnect South Park Coalition will develop a vision “of what a reclaimed SR-99 corridor could look like” and a plan to ensure future changes benefit current residents and businesses instead of displacing them, according to the statement.
