Longtime resident receives community award for parks advocacy and youth mentoring

Domingo Barron, a longtime business owner and youth sports coach in Georgetown, received the Patty Foley Community Builder Award last month.
Barron was honored at the annual Georgetown Post-Holiday Party held Jan. 27 at The Stables. More than 100 Georgetown residents and friends turned out for the annual Georgetown Post-Holiday Party.
Georgetown Community Council board member Greg Ramirez nominated Barron.
In the 90s, Ramirez played on the Georgetown Merchants Little League team coached by Barron. The team played at the Georgetown Playfield which was just dirt and rocks then. “You were taking your life into your hands if you played sport on it,” he said.
After a city parks levy passed, Barron connected with a City parks director and advocated for Georgetown’s park at a city meeting allocating the money for parks projects. He said the neighborhood barely had any amenities compared to other neighborhoods. Some advocating for parks projects elsewhere gave a percentage of their budgets to help Georgetown, Barron said. The field is now artificial turf.
“You invest in young people and mentor them. That’s the best thing you can do for a community,” Barron said. Along with baseball, Barron also coached girls soccer teams for several years.
Ramirez also credits Barron with bringing back to the forefront the idea of a Georgetown community center. He said they had several discussions with Barron reminding him there was a long ago promise from the city that was broken. The conversations led to securing money for a feasibility study through the city. Further funding from the city and county is helping with more fundraising strategy and planning.
“We’re so many steps closer to making it a reality,” Ramirez said. “Sometimes when people retire they can get a little jaded or think, ‘Hey, not my problem anymore,’ but not Domingo. He is still, ‘What can we do to protect the community? What can we do for the kids?’”
A longtime hair salon owner in Georgetown with his wife, Bev, Barron is a past GCC member who still attends meetings. Barron moved with his parents to Burien in 1960 but was always visiting his grandparents in Georgetown as a child. Years later, he settled with his own family in Georgetown. “It always felt like home here,” he said.
The Patty Foley Community Builder Award was first posthumously awarded to Foley in 2022. Marianne Clark (2023) and Holly Krejci (2024) have also been honored.
Also at the party, the Georgetown Community Council elected its board members for 2026.
The GCC meeting schedule for the year is below. All meetings will be held at Old City Hall, 6235 Airport Way S. unless announced otherwise.
