  • Open House & Bike Sale at the Dead Baby Bikes Clubhouse

Ever wondered what goes on at the Dead Baby Bicycle Clubhouse in the former vacuum repair shop on Fourth Ave South and South Lucille Street? Here's your opportunity to look around, meet the club members, and maybe take home some merchandise. Every second Saturday of the month (September 14, October 12, November 9, and December 14), the clubhouse will be open to the public as they begin selling off bikes, merch, and fixtures in preparation to vacate at the end of the year. The site at 402 South Lucille has been permitted to become a nine-story, 158-unit apartment building in 2025. As for the Dead Babies' future plans, a club spokesperson was characteristically opaque. 'We shall see,' they said. In the meantime, you're invited to drop in any second Saturday to check out this enduring and endearing Seattle subculture.

  • Summer Sips at Star Brass Works

At the apex of Seattle summertime, the perfect drink is Star Brass Works' pink lemondrop slushy. Prickly pear syrup makes the lemonade pink, and it's both intensely sweet and tart. Vodka and triple sec add the punch. Drink it slow to avoid brain freeze.

  • What in the Art Is Happening at Mini Mart City Park?

Guest post by Jenn Gosma In case you've missed it so far, you only have a couple of days left to check out the incredible exhibit Trash Talking at Mini Mart City Park. Trash Talking is an art show with 100+ life-size replicas of politically-charged objects by Michael Leavitt that throw a bright light on toxicity and waste. The show is colorful and interesting and laid out beautifully. The commentary and descriptions alongside the art leave the viewer with the artist's distinct and thoughtful point of view. Artist Michael Leavitt is a local, raised in the Central District. The show runs through Sunday, August 18, 12-5 pm.

  • Georgetown’s Best Pizza Is in SoDo

Nine Pies Pizzeria --just up First Avenue South in the SoDo Urbanworks complex--serves the best pies in a three-mile radius. Pizza chefs in the open kitchen toss and stretch the dough Neopolitan style and the pies are baked in a purpose-built gas oven. The crust is thin, chewy, and craveable, and the toppings are gourmet (Mama Lil's peppers, house-made meatballs, pancetta) without getting weird. My current favorite is the Siluro, topped with thin, rosemary roasted Yukon gold potato slices, red onion, mozzarella, and Gorgonzola cheese. Nine Pies also serves lovely salads, breadsticks, and calzones. If you're a drinker, you'll be glad to know they serve tap beer and Nine Hands' wine (tasting room next door). Seating is indoor and outdoor in good weather, and the service is unfailingly, authentically sweet. Though they don't deliver, takeout service is fast and friendly (call to order). And during lunch they serve pizza by the slice at the counter. Find Nine Pies at 3861 First Ave S, 11 am until 9 pm, seven days a week.

  • 28th Annual Dead Baby Downhill

The infamous gonzo downhill race started on Capitol Hill and ended with a gigantic freak-bike festival in industrial South Park on August 3rd. One person spent the night in the hospital after a bad spill on Beacon Hill, but a damn good time was had by everyone else, even though we kind of missed hosting the finish line here in Georgetown.

  • Cake Shop Calamity

Everything appears normal as the bustling Deep Sea Sugar and Salt cake shop serves slices and coffee this Saturday morning. But earlier this week, the staff got an awful surprise when the ceiling of their walk-in refrigerator collspsed. Apparently the walk-in used to function as beer storage but was not built well enough to withstand the moist conditions inside a bakery's cold room, and now Deep Sea is on the hook for repairs. According to shop manager Kim, special occasion orders were out of the walk-in being decorated when the ceiling fell, so no customer celebrations were ruined. Now the staff is getting creative in order to continue operating and are renting a refrigerated truck as a temporary solution during reconstruction. And they're not taking special orders at the moment. Go buy a slice or two and support this local small business as they pick up the pieces and eat the costs of faulty construction.

In the spirit of overhead telephone-wire dragons and other unauthorized public displays of creativity, brightly painted mystical cats are now boldly posed in at least two Georgetown traffic circles. The three-eyed felines serve to make the circle planters more visible to oncoming traffic and are also so dang cute. Well done, guerilla artists. More of this please.
